A Journey of Passion and Dedication
What are the main advantages of living in a property immersed in the Tuscan countryside?
Living here is about enjoying absolute peace and tranquility. As described by 15th-century artists, the light is the backdrop to the gentle sea breeze that cools summer evenings. The proximity to three of Italy’s most beautiful cities, Siena, Pisa and Florence, and from the two international airports is unparalleled. In this part of Tuscany, properties are classified and protected, and so are the landscapes!
What is your favorite place to enjoy the view of the Volterra hills?
Just sitting for five minutes on the terrace in front of the house, contemplating the view, is enough to find serenity and peace. Also, as I was personally involved in the renovation, I built an environment centered on light. Thanks to the large windows, the hill views can be admired from different spots in the house.
The renovation took three years to complete. What was the most challenging and the most rewarding part of this journey?
Definitely when I called a dowser, who detached a young sprout from an olive tree, stripped it to make a cane, and finally found water at the far end of the property, near the Cecina River. Since then, two years ago I had the opportunity to connect to Volterra’s municipal waterworks.
What original elements of the villa did you want to preserve?
Collecting and cleaning up the terracotta bricks that littered the floor, which came from the original vaults and I longed for, we discovered that some of them were cut at an angle. Some old retired masons showed us that two of these vaults were probably built differently because they had a cross on top that had been done first, which we redid under their advice.
Can you tell us an interesting fact or a surprising discovery you made during the renovation work?
About sixty original terracotta plaques were missing, and it was not possible to remake them identically in time. So I had two tons of clay delivered, therefore I made and fired them myself. I took the opportunity to insert ceramic elements representing the profiles of the leading figures of this adventure. This will be for the archaeologists of the future.
A house integrated with advanced technologies such as home automation and sustainable systems: how much did the original structure influence the renovation?
Having identically reconstructed the outer shell of the three successive houses that made up the complex, we had a large inner quadrangle in which we then built from scratch a 20th-century house, which was my initial goal, reusing all the period materials.
What advice would you give anyone dreaming of buying a villa like this?
Living in harmony with unspoiled nature while enjoying the benefits of modernity is an achievable dream. Just take the plunge and life will change.
